Checklist for Expat employment contracts in Germany

When moving to a new country it is mainly for work purposes. As an expat moving to Germany there are a number of things you should consider and make sure they are listed within your contract.  Our checklist provides you the information to offer a flawless career.

Contract Checklist

  • Firstly, you have to make sure that the contract is fully legal within the laws of the country and that the contract is translated into relevant law.
  • Make sure that you are entitled to the benefits, pensions, vacation leave, holidays and potentially relocation expenses.
  • If you are travelling from a non EU country, keep in mind the currency change of the Euro.
  • Be aware of the work arrangements and the employer’s policies.
  • In Germany it is illegal not to have a health insurance. Check if the employer covers it for you.
  • Job title and job description.
  • Date of commencement and termination. (Also check for the notice period)
  • If there is a probationary period, be aware for how long.
  • Hours per week/month expected from you.
  • Overtime pay entitlement.
  • Hourly rate or fixed monthly salary.
  • Tax provisions
  • Tax equalization.
  • Any agreements regarding tax between home country and host country.
